What is Barsa (Naming Ceremony) in Maharashtra?

In Maharashtra, the naming ceremony is lovingly called Barsa (बारसे), and it is usually done on the 12th day after the baby is born. It is also known as Namkaran Sohala or the Palna ceremony, because the baby is placed in a decorated cradle (पाळणा) for the first time on this day. That is why many families use the words "Naming Ceremony" and "Cradle Ceremony" for the same function.

Traditionally, the baby's aatya (father's sister) gets the honour of naming the baby and whispers the name into the baby's ear. The women of the family sing traditional palna songs while gently rocking the cradle, and ghugrya (boiled grains) are distributed to guests. Relatives, neighbours and friends come together to bless the baby, and the house is full of joy.

Since so many people need to be invited, a neat invitation in Marathi makes everyone feel respected and welcome.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. I don't know Marathi typing. Can I still make the card in Marathi?

Yes, this is the most loved feature. Just type in English like "barse" and it will automatically become "बारसे". You don't need any Marathi keyboard.

  2. Are Barsa, Naming Ceremony and Palna ceremony the same?

In most Marathi families, the naming and the cradle ceremony happen together on the Barsa day, so people use all these words for the same function. You can use our templates for any of them.

  3. Can I send the invitation on WhatsApp?

Yes. Download it as an HD image and share it directly on WhatsApp, Instagram or Facebook. It looks clear even on mobile screens.
